Review - Fahrenheit 451 by: Ray Bradbury

Title: Fahrenheit 451
Author: Ray Bradbury

Publisher: Harper Voyager
Pages: 227
Format: Paperback
Source: Personal purchase

Description:

The terrifyingly prophetic novel of a post-literate future.

Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to burn books, which are forbidden, being the source of all discord and unhappiness. Even so, Montag is unhappy; there is discord in his marriage. Are books hidden in his house? The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department, armed with a lethal hypodermic, escorted by helicopters, is ready to track down those dissidents who defy society to preserve and read books.

The classic dystopian novel of a post-literate future, Fahrenheit 451 stands alongside Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World as a prophetic account of Western civilization’s enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity.

Bradbury’s powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which, decades on from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock.

My thoughts:

My head still spins when I think about strange men who call themselves “firemen” coming into my house and burning my books… Still! In the world that Bradbury created, firemen don’t put out the fires; they create them. They do so by burning people’s books so they don’t discover anything or explore or think in any way. Of course, a society that doesn’t think or question is an ideal society for anyone that wants to rule a nation.

I had read this book in August, and then it took me a while to review it because I just kept thinking about it. If you asked me now, I wouldn’t be able to tell you the names of the characters (I’m bad with names anyway). But I’ll never forget Guy Montag’s (yes, I Googled his name) wake, his hunger for exploring the unknown, the delight he feels in discovering new things and questioning his own actions he used to take for granted. And, like I’ve said in the beginning, I’ll probably always get teary eyes when I picture books burning.

I’d read a lot about Fahrenheit 451 before I even touched the actual book, let alone sit down to read it. Some of the reviews said Bradbury was criticizing censorship, especially of books, and some were saying he tried to show us that television made people stupid. I think he did both. Montag’s wife and family are always staring at a TV and not really conversing among each other. I know there are a lot of people like that today who’ll sit at the dinner table with the TV on and not say a single word to one another until the end of the meal. This feels very weird to me. Maybe it’s because my family and my friends and I rarely feel the need to turn the TV on when we get together. If we turn it on for background noise, you’ll definitely have someone asking to turn the volume down or shut it off all together. Even we are in the same room to watch something together, we keep talking and talking and can’t really focus on what we’d agreed to watch.

Book censorship still continues as well. Among the books that have been banned/are still banned around the world include Lolita, Grapes of Wrath, Alice in Wonderland and To Kill a Mockingbird. Fahrenheit 451, too, is among banned books. But why are they being banned? Some of the reasons are “not appropriate for children,” or “not appropriate in terms of religion” or “it’s against our culture,” but the real reason is, someone in power doesn’t want people reading and exploring and thinking for themselves. Those who make fun of bookworms, saying, “don’t you have anything better to do?” or “are you going to save the world by reading?” are, I believe, people who are scared of the written word. They’re worried people will read, explore different lives, learn new things, find out about feelings they’ve never had before and, as a result, they’ll start thinking and overthinking and questioning.

Having gone through what we’ve all gone through here in Turkey with the Gezi Park resistance, I’ve seen that we live in a country where people who are reading books in a park can be attacked by the police with teargas. The government doesn’t want us expressing ourselves the way we want to, have the basic freedom of speech, doesn’t want us thinking or questioning. Yet, it’s a great relief and joy to know there are people in this country who will build libraries in a park and haul their own books there to share with others.

Ending this in the words of Bradbury:

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”

Book Spotlight: Puritan Witch by: Peni Jo Renner

Description:

On a cold night in 1692, two young girls are caught up in the divining games of a slave woman—and then begin to act very strangely when the game goes wrong.

Suddenly, Salem Village is turned upside down as everyone fears that witches may be involved. Six months later, as news of the girls’ strange behavior becomes known, fear and suspicion overwhelm a nearby farming community, pitting neighbors against neighbors and turning friends into enemies. When Rebecca Eames makes one careless utterance during a verbal attack on her family, she is falsely accused of witchcraft.

After her fate is decided by three magistrates, Rebecca must endure a prison sentence during which she and her fellow captives have no choice but to valiantly struggle to find humanity and camaraderie among dire conditions. In this novel based on a true story, a woman wrongly imprisoned during the seventeenth-century witchcraft trials comes full circle where she must determine if she can somehow resume her life, despite all she has endured.

Author:
Peni Jo Renner is the direct descendant of Rebecca Blake Eames, one of over 150 innocent people accused of witchcraft during the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. Rebecca Eames is her ninth great-grandmother.

Puritan Witch; The Redemption of Rebecca Eames, is a fictionalized account of one Puritan family’s ordeal during the witchcraft hysteria of colonial Massachusetts. After her fate is decided by three magistrates, Rebecca must endure a prison sentence during which she and her fellow captives have no choice but to valiantly struggle to find humanity and camaraderie among dire conditions.

Kelly Z. Conrad, author of the award-winning novel, Shaman, says of Puritan Witch, “Elegantly written, meticulously researched, and historically accurate, the author’s work rings true. Renner’s vast talent as a writer is enhanced by that fact that she’s telling the story of her own family, completely captivating from beginning to end.”

Hunger Games makeup for young girls

Every single company out there knows that especially Young Adults love what they love with passion, loyalty and excitement. Therefore, they keep feeding them products they know for sure will sell. What you see above is the special new line of makeup that COVERGIRL created for Hunger Games fans with the release of the new Catching Fire movie.

I belong to the generation of girls who ached to put on red lipstick in the 90's because of how awesome Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love were. They were (still are) strong, independent women who did/do as they wished. Now, I think Katniss is also a good role model, maybe even better, but why promote something she hates so much? She doesn't want the makeup, she doesn't want the fake smiles and costumes... Yet, on the other hand, this line does a good job in reflecting what Capitol represents.

They've created looks for every district, and those of you interested can check them out here.

Description:

A young boy with a COLD stays home to rest and feel better when he suddenly gets sucked into a strange world where he is coached by a "freshly picked" trainer named Boogie, who then teaches him how to fight a tough COLD. Will Boogie's training be enough for our hero to defeat the big and mighty COLD? With determination, good instruction and a spoonful of luck, our hero may just have a chance.

My Thoughts:

This was a great story about what happens when you are sick.  When the young boy gets sucked up into a strange new place he gets trained by Boogie his trainer.  He is being trained to fight the big and evil COLD.  This book was too cute and funny and great for sick kids to read while they are on the mend.  My kids thought this was soo funny especially the trainer of the hero.  They were in hysterics. Fabulous idea with this story!

Description:

Kids from preschool through second grade will LOVE this silly story about a young boy whose vivid imagination goes into overdrive as he wonders why his classmates aren’t showing up to school each day. He eventually discovers they are not being taken or in harms way but rather they just caught a COLD. Uncertain what a COLD actually is, our hero sets out on an adventure to literally catch a COLD. Will he succeed? Will he actually catch a COLD? Anyone who has ever been in a classroom where students start getting sick should know the answer to that question.

My Thoughts:

When a young boy finds his classmates missing from school he learns from his teacher that they have caught a cold.  Well this little boy wants in on what this COLD is.  He sets out to catch this bad guy where ever he maybe.  Little does he know that the COLD isn't far behind him.  The illustrations rock they so great.  The story is great for anyone who suffers a COLD and can appreciate the hero's adventure.  My kids thought this was funny when the hero tries to catch a COLD cause they know you can't catch it like a butterfly!

Guest Post: Chris Westlake author of Just a Bit of Banter, Like...

Guest Post: Chris Westlake

Why did I become a writer? Why does anyone become a writer?

The money? I’m sure there are writers who put pen to paper (or the 21st century equivalent) because they have heard of the vast fortunes of writers such as Steven King and JK Rowling and imagine drafting their second, best-selling novel, basking in the sun on the deck of their yacht. Bump. Reality hits. They move onto their next money-making adventure.

Writers soon realise that the literary food-chain is colossus. For every single bestseller stacking the shelves at the supermarkets, there are thousands and thousands of barely visible authors desperately trying to promote their books online. If you write to make money, it is likely you will write ‘The End’ sooner than you think. Asking why somebody becomes a writer and why they stay a writer may prompt very different answers.

So what about my story?

I’ve always written. As a child as young as eight, I’d fill notepads with elaborate stories of monsters and roller-coasters (sometimes monsters on roller-coasters) with plots limited only by the restraints of my considerable imagination. The stories never got sent anywhere. They were never for publication. But I still had my very own appreciative readership. My mum and grandmother would read my stories and I would treasure their enthusiastic comments. I wrote because I loved creating new worlds that were not limited by the predictability of real life. I wrote because I loved developing something that I could be proud of. And I wrote because I loved being read.

And they are the reasons why I still write now. Okay, I do make some money and one day I do hope to give up my day-job, but even if this never happens I know, and on heart, that I will continue writing. I will write because I want to create something better than I ever have before, enjoyed by more readers than my last novel. And I’ll write because I love it.

So why did I decide to write my first novel, Just a Bit of Banter, Like?

Put simply, it felt like the right time. I had graduated to my first novel.

I started off my writing in small, gradual steps. I enrolled on an online writing course. I made some pocket money by having a few letters published in magazines. I won a few writing competitions and came placed in a few more. Having my name in print was a thrill.

It was time.

I did not want to write a complex masterpiece. It was not realistic. It was not time. It was time to write a novel that I could be proud of, though. I chose a location that was close to my heart, the coastal town where I grew up. I developed characters that were engaging and that the reader cared for. The storyline was well-crafted and had real purpose. I drafted and edited and edited and drafted until I had created something that I was truly proud of. And the feedback from friends and publishers was also fantastic.

Just like the stories that were read by my mum and nan when I was a kid.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing a guest post with us!  To learn more about Chris Westlake you can check out his website and check out his book too!

Review: Pastels and Jingle Bells by: Christine S. Feldman

Title: Pastels and Jingle Bells
Author: Christine S. Feldman
Publisher: Kindle Direct
Format: ebook
Pages: 40
Source: Request Review

Description:

Trish Ackerly never expected to cross paths with Ian Rafferty again, but when she spots the former bully of her childhood years through her bakery window, she thinks she may just have been given the best Christmas gift ever: the opportunity to finally give Ian the comeuppance he deserves.

But clearly she does not have a knack for this whole revenge thing, because before she can make good on her plans, Trish gets inadvertently drawn into Ian’s life in an unexpected way that lets her see just how different the man is from the boy he used to be. In fact, much to her astonishment, she actually starts to like the guy.

A lot.

Trouble is, Ian doesn’t know who she really is, and explaining it to him is going to be a little difficult now—which is bad news, because Trish is starting to realize that all she really wants for Christmas this year…is Ian.

My Thoughts:

This book starts with Trish at work in her bakery and notices outside is the man who drove her nuts as kid.  All sorts of teasing she got from him.  She ends up working for him decorating windows for his daughter who is going through her own form of teasing at school.  Kelsey bonds quickly with Trish, and Trish bonds with helping Kelsey have a good Christmas.  Ian doesn't realize who Trish really is and eventually she has no option but to tell him the truth.  Will he accept who she really is?

This was such a cute novella I loved it.  I loved how the relationship between Ian and Trish forms and the things they learn about each other.  Also loved reading about Kelsey and Trish connecting.  Such a great Christmas story!

The unexpected mission and unexpected encounter with his soul mate, tests his strength. His mind, heart, and soul recognize his love even before the actual encounter. The ruthless criminals threaten to harm his soul mate, pushing and transforming him into a fearless warrior.

My Thoughts:

What an incredible moving story with so much passion.  When the book opens Roberto is dealing with the death of his family, and not long into gets his heart smashed again by a girl he loved.  Having sworn of women forever, he enters the Delta Force.

Claudia is a FBI Agent undercover cleaning up the streets from dirt bags when she finds herself in need of rescuing being held captive by a Mexican drug lord.  It's up to Delta Force to rescue her.

This book had everything lots of actions, adventure and lots of family togetherness. You could tell the author was big into family togetherness which is great.  I loved that the two characters went round each other until they were involved with each other.  When that happened boy did the sparks fly!

Certain parts of the book were filled with oh my goodness hot and steamy definitely a great book for those who love steamy Mexican characters!  Much Love to the author for a great book to read!!

Editorial: Love in the 20's from women's point-of-view

I always say I was born at the wrong end of the 19th century. I should've lived in the 20's in my 20's! Keeping an eye on everything 20's, I caught NPR's Prohibition-Era Passion: Three '20s Books on Trailblazing Loves article. It tells us a little bit about how '20s is a period of immense change (mostly in the US and England, though) and how this is reflected in the people fell in love and then, of course, the literature. The three books NPR shared are all written by women, which I believe is another proof of how women tend to be brave and courageous. I'll let you be the judge, though, obviously, so check them out here.

Description:

It's feeding time at the zoo!

In this cute children's book about animals you'll see three adorable zoo animals - a penguin, a hippo and a lion as they get ready to eat their lunch.

And how should these three zoo animals spend the rest of their afternoon? You'll just have to read the book and see!

Alexis's Review:

Alexis liked this book and she liked when the animals were eating lunch and dinner.  She also liked how the words were easy for her to pronounce.

My Thoughts:

This was a cute book which follows three cute animals as they get ready for lunch and show what they like to eat.  Also the words are easy for kids to pronounce when they are learning to read stories for the first time.  Definitely a book all kids will enjoy!

Title: The Wingmaker by: Lynette Louise

Title: The Wingmaker
Author: Lynette Louise
Publisher: Motovational Press Inc.
Pages: 56
Format: ebook
Source: Request Review
Purchase: Amazon
Description:

The WingMaker is about a little girl that gave her life so that others could grow wings. It is about the beauty gifted to the capable by the challenged. It is about becoming worthy by becoming aware; first of oneself and then of others. The little girl, whose name is Reazon, has Cerebral Palsy. She has spent her life in a wheelchair, surrounded by siblings that play while her mother works. Her dream is to play and be "normal" so that her mother won't have to work so hard. Since Reazon is her mother's reason for the many choices in life, change is not easy to attain. A specialist by the name of Happy-Ness arrives and teaches the art of play and how to use biofeedback for the brain in order to recreate the game. This is a story of discovery that answers the question, "Who makes wings? The savior or the saved?" It's the WingMaker of course. This story is true, if you think it can be.

My Thoughts:

There is so much you can experience with this powerful book.  One thing I think is spend time with your kids help them succeed.  Don't place them in a room and hope they will know what to do.  Never discount the time you have together you never know when that time is gone.  This book rocks, it was awesome and full of so much emotion and thoughts.  And like people say about it you can learn something the many times you read this book over and over again!

Review Cinnamon Summer by: Christine Cunningham

Title: Cinnamon Summer
Author: Christine Cunningham
Publisher: Eternal Beginnings Publishing
Pages: 96
Series: Willow Reed
Format: ebook
Source: Request Review

Description:

Loneliness can make you desperate.

Her father's ailing health forces Camille and her son, Peter to move from the city lights of Chicago to the moonlight of small-town, Willow Reed. Nothing is familiar and nothing feels like home. Her new job in the town's bakery is harder than she expected and the strange chemistry between Camille and her boss, Émile is confusing to say the least. A surprising email from her ex-husband makes her feel all the anxiety and loneliness she’s been trying to suppress.

Will the upcoming nuptials for Camille's ex-husband push her into the arms of the wrong man?

My Thoughts:

This was a great novella in which we watch as Camille balances her new life in Willow Reed after leaving Chicago.  When her father needs her Camille comes home and makes a life for herself and her son.  Not long into this drama unfolds when Camille's ex-husband Erik is getting married and wants Peter to be there for the wedding also implying to be more active in Peter's life.  And there is over course a new man interested in Camille but is he truly what she is looking for?

I don't usually enjoy novellas because they are usually missing something but this one wasn't it.  It was great reading about Willow Reed and the people there.  This story was really sweet and enjoyed watching Camille find her way and decide what was important to her!

Title: Read Me Dead by: Emerald Barnes

Title: Read Me Dead
Author: Emerald Barnes
Pages: 223

Description:

Alexia Wheaton’s problems go beyond picking a dress and a date for homecoming.

For seven years, Alex has lived with a painful memory - her parents' horrific murder. As the sole witness, she has kept quiet to protect herself, but when the local newspaper reveals her secret, Alex is plagued with fear that her parents' murderer will soon find her - and silence her forever.

Alex is catapulted into a race against time to save her own life and bring her parents' murderer to justice.

My Thoughts:

This book follows the life of Matty and Alexia Wheaton who had their lives turned upside down when their parents were murdered.  Alexia saw who killed her parents but is hiding the information for fear of her safety.

As time goes on Alex figures out that the murderer is out to silence her forever.  She tries her best to handle what is happening without putting her ex-boyfriend Christian or their best friend Landon from harm.

When the truth starts to unravel Alex fears for her life and finds herself face to face with the killer who has reminded Alex that she didn't keep her promise.  Teaming up with Matty and Christian along with Alex's fathers journal they put the pieces together of what happened.  Will they make it out in time or is the killer one step ahead of her?

What a gripping story I love how Ms. Barnes is able to weave a great young adult book along with mystery, and thriller.  She has the ability to write characters that make you feel like your right along with them.  My only regret is not reading this book alot sooner. This book reminds me of authors I read by Merit Press.  Such an incredible journey that these teens go through. I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Review: Necklaces & Nooses by: Laina Turner

Title: Necklaces & Nooses
Author: Laina Turner
Publisher: Five Seas Ink
Pages: 191
Series: Presley Thurman Mystery #2
Format: ebook
Source: Book Tour

Description:

When Presley’s boss is found hanging, she thinks it's suicide until the police discover it's homicide. Who would want to kill a boutique owner? Presley’s not sure, but she’s determined to find out. The cute detective assigned to the case makes it all the more exciting.

My Thoughts:

Presley has a new job working at Silk a high end clothing line.  Not long into this book she finds her boss hanging in the changing room.  After calling 9-1-1 Presley spends a while going over everything she can think of to a cute cop, hoping that she can be cleared of the crime.  Presley's big question is who killed her boss?  And why did they kill her?

There are a few options there is her boss's soon to be ex-husband who wanted her to sell the company.  While he is a lawyer there is always the possibility of a murder for hire situation, an ex- employee who may yet again hire someone to kill the boss.  But what is there to gain?

This book was full of things we come to expect with Ms. Turner, the twists and turns and adventure that comes with Presley Thurman book.  Definitely a great addition to the series that really makes you want to read more until you run out of pages.  Definitely a fun series and great for those who love reading about Chicago, and mystery!

Title: Escape From Eden by: Elisa Nader

Title: Escape From Eden
Author: Elisa Nader
Publisher: Merit Press
Pages: 271
Format: Hardcover ARC
Source: NetGalley

Description:

Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. In Edenton, a supposed “Garden of Eden” deep in the South American jungle, everyone follows the Reverend’s strict but arbitrary rules—even the mandate of whom they can marry. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. When the rebellious and sexy Gabriel, a new boy, arrives with his family, Mia sees a chance to escape.

But the scandalous secrets the two discover beyond the compound’s façade are more shocking than anything they ever imagined. While Gabriel has his own terrible secrets, he and Mia bond together, more than friends and freedom fighters. But is there time to think of each other as they race to stop the Reverend’s paranoid plan to free his flock from the corrupt world? Can two teenagers crush a criminal mastermind? And who will die in the fight to save the ones they love from a madman who’s only concerned about his own secrets?

My Thoughts:

This was a very good book about Mia and Gabriel and what they went through in Edenton, a community of people who live within a flock and have a Reverend who everyone thinks is great except to Mia and Gabriel.  Mia has been with the flock since she was 10 she has a hard time buying what the flock represents and wonder what is really going on?  Gabriel just arrived with his parents and is having trouble towing the line.

The two find out what is really going on and how they can fight for what they know is right, as opposed to what is really going on.

This book was very different to be able to write about a place like Edenton which reminds me of places like Waco, Texas.  Ms. Nader is very good at describing what is going on within the flock.  The shelterness that they have going on.

Review Dead Stock by: Tim Hall

Title: Dead Stock
Author: Tim Hall
Publisher: Cozy Cat Press
Pages: 200
Series: Bert Shambles Mystery #1
Format: ebook
Source: Book Tour

Description:

Meet Bert Shambles, a perpetually confused young man whose life continually mirrors his surname. He's stuck back in his suburban Long Island hometown, enduring a three-year suspended sentence for an act of chivalry gone terribly wrong. He works part-time at a church thrift shop and makes extra money by selling "dead stock"-vintage clothes that have never been worn-to a local boutique.

On a routine pick up for the thrift shop, Bert learns that the widow of a recently deceased pro golfer is offering a reward for the return of her dead husband's favorite putter-and an even bigger reward for proof that her husband was murdered. Bert jumps at the chance, and soon finds himself being chased by a violent, van-driving maniac, romantically involved with a mobster's daughter, and quite possibly being set up to take the fall by his probation officer and crazy ex-girlfriend. As the forces of good and evil close in around him, Bert must race to clear his name and discover the truth so he doesn't wind up in prison...or worse.

Filled with twists, turns, and unforgettable characters, and propelled by a truly lovable hero and wicked sense of humor, Dead Stock heralds the arrival of a wonderful new mystery series.

My Thoughts:

In this book we meet Bert Shambles who's trying to keep his nose clean while finishing up his probation after a stint in jail a local parishioner went the extra mile for Bert and offered him steady employment while he finished out his term.  Bert works for a local thrift shop picking up clothes and other items people donate.

The book starts out with Bert heading to pick up a dead stock of clothing that belonged to Corky Healey a pro-golfer who died recently.  Although Mrs. Healey is adamant that her husband was murdered as one of his golf clubs is also missing.

This book was full of what we see with many cozy mysteries, action and adventure and a big who killed Corky!  I enjoyed meeting Bert and the people he interacts with.  What I also enjoyed is that Bert isn't a typical sleuth.  He has served time which makes him more like a criminal in thinking like one. Can't wait to see what happens next.

True, she may have unexpected depths and beauty to match. But he knows he could never be the man she needs…and she knows he could never be the man she thinks she wants. So why are they each hoping that a Christmas miracle willl prove them both wrong?

My Thoughts:

This book was from NetGalley for a honest and fair review.  The book starts out with Dylan Caine waiting for his brother to show up for a drink at the local bar while he is waiting he's getting sick of listening to various variations of The Little Drummer Boy when he notices Genevieve Beaumont who is sick of the Christmas music as well and gets into a fight with the local District Attorney over the musical choices.  Genevieve gets into a nasty fight with the local DA and winds up getting herself and Dylan Caine arrested.

Their punishment for the fighting is community service at a local military project to help wounded soliders get some rest and recuperation along with some fun activities to help soliders overcome their ailments.

Quickly into the book you can see the electricity flow between Gen and Dylan.  Gen is suppose to be flipping her Grandmother Pearl's house in hopes of earning her inheritance back so she can return to Paris.  She left alot of damage in her wake of her failed wedding.  Since her return she is trying to figure out what she wants, to move on from the disaster she was last time she was in town.  Unfortunately alot of people in town have their opinion of who Gen is.  It takes the miracle of love and weddings to fix the situation.

I loved this story and the way the author included a book about a group of wounded soliders and gave a great prospective on the military and things they endure.  It was a great book full of romance, and friendships beginning.  I really loved it and can't wait to read more by this author.

Title: Under The Mistletoe by: Jill Shalvis

Title: Under The Mistletoe
Author: Jill Shalvis
Publisher: Forever Yours
Pages: 86
Format: ebook
Source: Purchase Barnes & Noble

Description:

Mia Hutchinson, Tara and Ford's daughter from THE SWEETEST THING , has asked her college boyfriend , Nick, to travel to Lucky Harbor for her aunt Maddie's Christmas Eve wedding.

Despondent when Nick refuses her invitation, Mia returns home alone and faces her high school sweetheart Carlos Rodriguez for the first time since refusing his marriage proposal. Only to find that he is happily dating someone else.

With love and holiday spirit everywhere, Mia wonders who will kiss her this Christmas under the mistletoe?

My Thoughts:

Mia thought she had a good thing going with Nick when she tries to ask him to go to Lucky Harbor for a wedding, Nick fails her expectations.  Mia heads to Lucky Harbor alone while Nick is trying to process where he went wrong.  Nick had never had a family or known what love was.  Nick also knew somewhere deep down that Mia was what he wanted.  Risking it all Nick heads to Lucky Harbor to find Mia.

Mia is trying to come to grips with the failed relationship that she thinks is over when Nick shows up, Mia isn't sure what Nick wants anymore.  Nick is also not leaving Lucky Harbor without Mia.

This was a great Christmas novella to the Lucky Harbor series.  We meet Lucky Harbor residents and get a treat at a romance in the making.  I love Mrs. Shalvis ability to weave such incredible romantic stories.  I love her characters and the sass they have!!

Review Athena's Holiday by Laina Turner

Title: Athena's Holiday
Author: Laina Turner
Format: ebook
Source: Book Tour

Description:

Meet Athena Parks, thirty something law professor who on a whim invites a guy she just met, Tristan West, home with her for the holidays. As crazy as it might seem she was willing to risk him being an ax murder in order to have a buffer between her and her mom. They had that kind of relationship.

Things were going well and she couldn’t deny there was chemistry between them. Maybe this was a sign she had finally found a good guy. Until her uncle Peter recognized Tristan. Who wasn’t Tristan at all. Who was he?

My Thoughts:

This was a great start to a story, unfortunatly the book ended before it really began.  We meet Athena who is a law professor and about to celebrate the holidays when she dumps her boyfriend after finding him with another girl.

Then she meets Tristan West who seems to good to be true.  He enjoys the ballet just like she does.  After finding out he has nowhere to go for Christmas she invites him home to be with her family over the holiday.

As the night progresses and everything seems to be moving in a good way Athena's Uncle ends up on the computer investigating Tristan to find out who he really is.  So who is Tristan West.

This was a good book although it just ended, I want to learn more about Tristan and what he tells Athena.  It is the making of a great story to say the least.

Review Books Aren't Just For Reading by: Laina Turner

Title: Books Aren't Just For Reading
Author: Laina Turner
Publisher: Five Sea Ink
Series: Trixie Pristine Series #2
Format: ebook
Pages: 382
Source: Book Tour

Description:

Trixie and her friends, Berklie and Sophie, are excited about the opening of Read/Wine, tbeir new business venture, of a bookstore/wine bar. All is going well, until they happen to find a dead body in the shop and that wasn't part of the business plan. All signs point to Berklie since it was her ex-husband's lover who was murdered. Trixie knew Berklie hadn't murdered Sylvia so who did?

My Thoughts:

Early in this book Trixie, Berklie, and Sophie find a dead woman in their shop prior to it's opening.   With their shop the scene of a crime the girls are determined to figure out what happened.  Especially when it looks like Berklie is on the line for the murder due to a relationship with the murdered victim when her cheating husband had an affair with the victim.

It doesn't take long for their shop to reopen but the big question being who killed Sylvia?  Slowly they begin to peice Sylvia's life together.

This book was a great journey that we get to see Trixies, Berklie, and Sohpie and what they are up to and how they handle this latest mystery. It's great connecting with a series that isn't laden with sex or heavy gore that seems to be with lots of books lately.  Can't wait to see what is next with this series!

Review: Murderous Matrimony by: Joyce Lavene & Jim Lavene

Murderous Matrimony (Renaissance Faire Mystery #6)

Description:

In less than two short weeks, Jessie Morton will marry Chase Manhattan at Renaissance Faire Village and Marketplace. But so much can go wrong in that short time. A man is murdered in Jessie’s new Arts and Crafts Museum and her assistant is being scrutinized for the deed. Chase’s brother and parents have arrived and are still against their marriage. Wanda’s ghost is busy making Jessie’s life miserable. The Ren Faire wedding of her dreams may never take place. Can Jessie talk Chase into eloping before it’s too late?

My Thoughts:

This is the 6th book in the series and this one starts out with Jessie and Chase getting ready for their wedding in two weeks, but unlike most weddings this one will be held in the village with all their friends and family.  That is of course if Jessie can get a ghost off her case and solve a murder.  Jessie can't seem to get Wanda off her case a woman who died and is now spending eternity harassing Jessie.  Jessie is determined to find a way that Wanda can't haunt anyone else, including Jessie herself.

Not far into the book a murder is committed. David a madman to the village is found dead and Jessie's new worker is their prime suspect add to that Jessie's museum is off limits until the murder is solved.  Is this a case of a hatred between the two men and one of them killing the other or is something more sinister going on?  Will Chase and Jessie have a happily ever after or will there even be a wedding?

I love reading this series it's unlike any other cozy mystery.  You have the mystery but then you have the whole Renaissance Faire thing going on that I love people in costumes and the way they talk it's incredible how the authors have added that to the story.  I also love how Jessie is able to investigate without to much negativity with Chase.  He doesn't warn her against it.  And of course going back to read about various characters and what they are up to now is always a great treat in itself.

Review: Granny Hooks A Crook by: Julie Seedorf

Title: Granny Hooks A Crook
Author: Julie Seedorf
Publisher: Cozy Cat Press
Pages: 200
Series: A Fuschia Minnesota Mystery
Format: ebook
Source: Cozy Mystery Book Tours

Granny Hooks a Crook: A Fuschia Minnesota Mystery
Description:

Granny leads a secret life in the small, unique community of Fuschia, Minnesota. It's not just her all junk food diet, multiplying pets, or her shocking bedtime attire that makes Granny one in a million. No, Granny is an undercover cop, charged by "the Big Guy" (the town's police chief) of preventing theft in local stores. Granny takes her job seriously and daily foils many shoplifters using her trusty spiked umbrella and amazing acting skills. When some startlingly brazen burglaries begin to occur that Granny can't solve, along with mysteriously appearing bad guys, disappearing clerks, and misplaced Corvettes, Granny begins to wonder if she isn't ready for the wrinkle farm. Maybe, it's fortuitous when she accidentally-on-purpose falls in the lap of an attractive older gentleman who is soon roped into her wild adventures, as they try to figure out what's happening in their little town.

My Thoughts:

First off I want to extended my deepest sympathy's to Mrs. Seedorf and her family, on Monday Nov. 6th.  We hope they find peace during this sad time!

This book was such a different from most cozy mysteries it was so full of humor and other things.  When we meet Granny whose real name is Hermony, she is waking up in the morning getting ready to perform her normal routine of checking her neighbors with binoculars. After all is well with them she heads off to her other job a secret job.

The secret job is shop security working with the Big Guy in helping nap crooks and put them where they belong.  But there is a heist running loose and Granny is beginning to wonder if she has lost her touch or is she ready for the wrinkle farm.

Then she meets Franklin Gatsby who is an ex-cop and something about him excites Granny and she wonders if he is part of the heist or just someone she could enjoy her time with?  Then of course there is Gram a new old lady in town who Granny could swear she recognizes but can't place it.  Gram seems to be set on driving Granny nuts to say the least.

Will Granny nab her crook?  Or will she admit defeat to her children and go to the wrinkle farm without a fight?  Is Franklin Gatsby a good buy or a bad crook?

I loved this book, the humor, adventure and mystery.  It really made a great read.  I can't wait to see what Granny hooks next!!

Freezer I'll Shoot (A Vintage Kitchen Mystery, #3)

Description:

ICE COLD

Trying to escape her overbearing mother, vintage kitchenware enthusiast and soon-to-be columnist Jaymie Leighton retreats to her family’s cottage on Heartbreak Island. While there she hopes to write an article about the Ice House restaurant, owned by good friends and neighbors, siblings Ruby and Garnet Redmond. Once an actual icehouse, the restaurant is charmingly decorated with antique tools of the trade, including a collection of ice picks.

One night, while working on her article, Jaymie overhears an argument and, ever the sleuth, sets out to explore. But when she stumbles upon a dead body her blood runs cold. It’s Urban Dobrinskie, whose feud with the Redmonds is no secret, and he’s got an ice pick through his heart. Now Jaymie’s got to sharpen her sleuthing skills to chip away at the mystery and prove her neighbors’ innocence—before someone else gets picked off….

My Thoughts:

This was a great mystery to read.  In it we are brought to Heartbreak Island where Jaymie Leighton is trying to fix the cottage so people can rent it again.  While there she writes an article for a local paper called the Howler.  She ends up at the Ice House Restaurant to learn about ice picking back in the day and how they kept things cool when it was hot out!

Not long there is a body that turns up Urban Dobrinkskie whose time has run out.  Was it Garnet or Ruby Redmond mysterious siblings who have been here for 7 years and past that no one knows a thing about them.  Or is it his business partner Will Lindsay who seems to be a mystery in himself.  Or is it someone closer to home.  As Jaymie having the unfortunate issue of Urban being killed on her property really wants to know what happened to him.  As she investigates Jaymie finds more and more questions and less answers.

All the while Jaymie is dealing with a battle of the mother's between Jaymie's and Daniel's mothers they seem to butt heads over the dinner party at Rose Cottage as Jaymie's mom wants it at Rose Cottage it's always been there in her eyes it's case closed.  Mrs. Collins Daniel's mom wants it at Stowe House which is a non started for Jaymie and her mom.  Finally a decision is made that appeases everyone!

I really enjoyed meeting these characters and learning about vintage kitchen's.  I loved reading about Hoppy the cute little three legged dog.  Who definitely saved the day!!  Three cheers for Hoppy!!  Can't wait to see what Ms. Hamilton comes up with next!!

Cupcakes Aren't Just for Eating (The Trixie Pristine series)
Description:

Trixie, Berklie, and Sophie are enjoying the success of their bookstore/coffee shop/wine bar, Read-Wine, and planning for Sophie’s upcoming wedding when they start receiving hang up calls. At first they chalk it up to a wrong number but soon the caller reveals himself. It’s Stephen making good on his threat. He wants his money back. The fact that the police confiscated it doesn’t matter to him. He wants it back and has given them a deadline. A deadline they need to meet before anyone else ends up dead.

Finding out Sophie’s fiancé isn’t who he says he is a shock but his alter ego might come in handy getting Stephen to leave them alone. But with this much money at stake will he? Or are they in danger?

My Thoughts:

This book is about Trixie, Berklie, and Sophie who are getting ready for Sophie's wedding to Jonathan a classmate of Trixie and Berklie's.  When a customer comes into the shop and has a cupcake and winds up dead from poisioning.  Was it his evil soon to be ex-wife who did him in?  Or his barmaid girlfriend?  Or some other seedy person from his past?

Add to this the mysterious evil with a capital E Stephen who the girls dealt with in the past who's looking for the money the police confiscated.  Steven is on the lamb from the mob in California plus he's hiding from the Police who want to question him with a recent bombing.  Will anyone ever catch Stephen or will the girls payout?

This book was great and full of quirky characters.  For anyone just picking up the series I believe they would make good stand alone books as they aren't so much of a continuation as you read them you will get back stories to previous things the girls have been up too.  So it solves any questions about previous crimes in the series.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in one sitting and loved the relationship these three women have with each other.  Definitely a great mystery writer and someone I will seek out more mysteries by.  Keep up the great work Ms. Turner!
