Some movies ARE as good as the books

I'm currently reading Stephen King's new novel, Doctor Sleep, which meant I had to revisit The Shining. The girls from my blog tour group are reading the book as well, and they asked me if they should read The Shining first. I told them they could get away with just watching the movie if they could because it was just as good. That got me thinking: we complain about movies not portraying books well most of the time, but there are actually good ones out there. Here' s what I've come up with so far:

Of course, I had to mention The Shining first because it inspired this post afterall.

American Psycho

Fight Club

The Road

Struck by Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal

The Help

The Great Gatsby

Veronika Decides to Die

Water for Elephants
(I actually had a hard time getting through this book, but I did like the movie)

True Blood
(Not a movie, I know, but it's worth mentioning because the TV show is much, much better than the books.)

A Clockwork Orange

Great Expectations
(For those who'd enjoy a more modern take on the story)

Great Expectations
(This one's closer to the book)

Romeo & Juliet

The Notebook

Trainspotting

Girl. Interrupted

Sophie's Choice

Of Mice and Men

And, of course, the Harry Potter movies!

Do let us know if you agree, and if you think any other movies should be added to the list.
