The Selection by: Kiera Cass

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Pages: 327
Publisher: Harper Teen
Series: The Selection #1

Description:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. the opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

The America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself-- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My thoughts:

Life is a beauty contest now, and in The Selection, which takes place in the future in a world quite different from ours, life's still a beauty contest. Marrying the prince to a girl from the crowd is one of their ways of keeping the peace. America doesn't want to do it, but her mother is so excited that she decides to. And, the love of her life (for now, at least) Aspen also thinks she should do it because she deserves a better life.

Most of the book is about what goes on when the 35 girls are 'competing' at the palace. You put a bunch of young girls in a confined space and show them a throphy, and you know what's going to happen. This is a quick, rather entertaining read, and America is a very likable character. So if you need a quick one, this might just be the book for you. I have no idea how the author came to name the girl America though, which I thought was a very unusual choice.

Also, as I type this, this series is being turned into a TV show.
