From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a captivating love story filled with suspense and mystery.

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

My Thoughts:

This book follows Katie a young woman new to Southport who keeps to herself and doesn't share much of her history.  She meets Alex at his store and helps him when his son almost drowns in the river by comforting his daughter Kristen.  She also meets a new neighbor Jo who helps people when they loose someone.  But who really is Katie and why is she in Southport what is she running from?

Then we meet Erin and Kevin who are a married couple living in Massachusetts.  Erin does everything to please her husband but fails miserably and always pays for it.  What Erin can't figure out is what she did wrong in the first place.  Will she ever figure it out?  Or will she escape Kevin or die by his hands?

This was a great story with so much going on.  We learn alot about Katie/Erin and the things she has gone through in life.  We also learn about Alex, Carly and their kids Josh and Kristen.  Carly having recently died and Alex doing his best by his kids.  We also watch a relationship blossom between Katie and Alex even with all their struggles it is such a beautiful relationship to watch grow even as they stumble at times.

Nicholas Sparks never disappoints anything he touches.  He's such a gifted story teller getting into women's heads and sharing their stories with us.  I can't wait to pick up the next Nicholas Sparks book that crosses my path!
