Review: Doom with A View by: Victoria Laurie

Title: Doom with a View
Author: Victoria Laurie
Series: Psychic Eye Mystery #7
Publisher: Berkley
Source: e-book ( 314 p.) Personal Purchase

Description:

Business has been frustratingly slow for Abby who needs any new commission she can get, even if it means agreeing to a job with the FBI that puts her at the center of an internal political struggle between two powerful agents, one of whom is the flinty lead investigator and confirmed skeptic Brice Harrison.  Abby's skills are continually tested – along with her patience – as she works to convince Harrison that she's not only the real deal, but can help him locate three college teens who've mysteriously disappeared.

Abby's intuition tells her these are no random abductions—and foresees another victim being kidnapped. To get to the bottom of the case, she and Harrison will have to put their differences aside and work together to find the connection between the missing kids. And to do that, Abby will have to win Harrison over, while keeping her psychic eye wide open.

My Thoughts:

Abby and Candice find themselves up against a hard skeptic who doesn't believe in intuitives regardless of how good they are. Abby finds herself getting flustered trying to prove that she is the real deal. Candice finds an instant dislike to Harrison. They spend most of their time being threatened with going to jail. And on four separate occasions being sent back to Michigan which apparently becomes a running gag. As every time you think they are going home they turn around and go back. In the end Abby ends up saving both Candice and Harrison when they need it the most, which turns the hard skeptic to her side.

Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan, are tense. But then the mayor of Chicago calls Merit and Ethan to a clandestine meeting and tells them about a violent vamp attack that has left three women missing. His message is simple: get your House in order. Or else.

Merit needs to get to the bottom of this crime, but it doesn't help that she can't tell who's on her side. So she secretly calls in a favor from someone who's tall, dark, and part of an underground vamp group that may have some deep intel on the attack. Merit soon finds herself in the heady, dark heart of Chicago's supernatural society—a world full of vampires who seem to be ready to fulfill the protesting human's worst fears, and a place where she'll learn that you can't be a vampire without getting a little blood on your hands.

My Thoughts:

This book follows Merit as she is helping her house after the mess that happened in the previous book.  Someone is messing with the humans again this time using a special pull that alters the mind of people.  Merit and Ethan are looking into what could be going on.  Unfortunately the council sent a representative to check on Ethan's house which puts them all under fire for anything and everything.  What a new girl vampire to do?

I love this series it's a lot of fun and keeps you on your toes.  You find you can't wait to see what is next.  I love watching Merit, Mall, Catcher and everyone else it's like when your favorite paranormal tv show comes back from a hiatus you get all excited to see what is next!

As the paranormal bonding season for the High Council Witches begins, Mae must quickly decide who to trust and who to fear before a deadly family tradition repeats itself and her chance to live a normal life completely disappears.

My Thoughts:

This book follows Mae who with her aunt has spent alot of timing moving around and wind up back at the family home.  What she didn't count on so many secrets being hidden in this small sleepy town the big one having alot to do with the residents in town.

Mae meets some interesting people in town where she is now going to school with the kids and finding out what the big deal with this town is.  Will she learn what her mother went through at her age or will she feel more isolated?

This book had so much going on with teens and the ups and downs along with the lineage that exists in the town where some are accepted as a towns member or will they move again?  Definitely a great series to start of with the book drags you in and doesn't let go!

Review: Twice Bitten by: Chloe Neill

Title: Twice Bitten
Author: Chloe Neill
Publisher: Penguin Group NAL Trade
Series: Chicagoland Vampires #3
Format: Paperback ( 355 p.) Personal Purchase

Description:

Merit, Chicago’s newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene—and to spy for the vamps while she’s at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan’s offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment, even though she knows that she’ll probably regret it. And she’s not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She’ll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals—not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries old master vampire.

My Thoughts:

Merit is learning it's not easy to play well with others.  Ethan her master has decided she will protect Alpha Gabriel Keene which is easier said then done.  The werewolves haven't exactly had the easiest time deciding to come out or not.  Merit finds herself in deep trouble and has to act fast to save the Alpha Gabriel.

I love this series it's so much fun to follow along with Merit, Ethan, Gabriel and others to see how they will fair in the windy city.  It's such a different type of paranormal series, which makes it great and this group of Chicagoland's will make it such a kick butt type rag tag team!

My Thoughts:

In this book we follow Autumn Thorne who had her heart broken young by her boyfriend Keaton who seems to despise all things magic when the two are paired off together Autumn tries to fight the whole situation, but is drawn to Keaton because of his daughter Chloe.

Keaton is determined to be done with Autumn and her crazy family.  He has his daughter and his life is nice when he keeps getting drawn back to Autumn he learns things he never knew.  He also finds he is still in love with her.

This book had so much going on with Autumn determined to move on without Keaton in her life, but finds that task impossible as they keep getting thrown together and the fire heats up between them.  I love also how it incorporated his daughter into the mix and we see the lengths they go to to save Autumn.  So much fun and excitement!

Review: Night Pleasures by: Sherrilyn Kenyon

Title: Night Pleasures
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Series: Dark Hunters #`
Format: e-book ( 309 p.) Personal Purchase

Description:

See how it all began…

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be immortal? To journey through the night stalking the evil that preys on humans? To have unlimited wealth, unlimited power?

That is my existence, and it is dark and dangerous. I play hero to thousands, but am known to none. And I love every minute of it.

Or so I thought until one night when I woke up handcuffed to my worst nightmare: an accountant. She’s smart, sexy, witty, and wants nothing to do with the paranormal.

My attraction to Amanda Devereaux goes against everything I stand for. Not to mention the last time I fell in love it cost me not only my human life, but also my very soul. Now I find myself wanting to believe that love and loyalty do exist.

Even more disturbing, I find myself wondering if there’s any way a woman can love a man whose battle scars run deep, and whose heart was damaged by a betrayal so savage that he’s not sure it will ever beat again.

Kyrian of Thrace

My Thoughts:

If you have read the chronicles of Nick then you somewhat know of Kyrian of Thrace.  You know this as the guy who hired Nick to work for him.  Well in this book you learn about Dark Hunters how they came to be and you learn about Kyrian what horrors he had been through about his bad love affair and how it all fell apart and how he finally found love.

Amanda was a pure girl who is also a sorceress and has yet to tap into her powers.  After recently breaking up with her boyfriend who was dull as dirt.  She found herself handcuffed to a Dark Hunter who stirred something in her she didn't know was there.

Dark Hunters aren't allowed to love.  but the connection between Amanda and Kyrian is so much when danger approaches Amanda has a choose to do something she didn't think possible to save Kyrian will she choose to help him or not?

I love Dark Hunters and I also loved this book also featured sarcastic Nick and all his young glory.  I loved watching the relationship bloom between Kyrian and Amanda and see where it led to such a fabulous story and lots of action as well!

Review: Small Town Monsters by: Diana Rodriguez Wallach

Title: Small Town Monsters
Author: Diana Rodriguez Wallach
Publisher: Underlined

Description:

The Conjuring meets The Vow! This terrifying paperback original tells the unputdownable story of a girl, a dark angel, and the cult hellbent on taking over her small, coastal town.

Vera Martinez wants nothing more than to escape Roaring Creek and her parents' reputation as demonologists. Not to mention she's the family outcast, lacking her parents' innate abilities, and is terrified of the occult things lurking in their basement.

Maxwell Oliver is supposed to be enjoying the summer before his senior year, spending his days thinking about parties and friends. Instead he's taking care of his little sister while his mom slowly becomes someone he doesn't recognize. Soon he suspects that what he thought was grief over his father's death might be something more...sinister.

When Maxwell and Vera join forces, they come face to face with deeply disturbing true stories of cults, death worship, and the very nature that drives people to evil.

Underlined is a line of totally addictive romance, thriller, and horror paperback original titles coming to you fast and furious each month. Enjoy everything you want to read the way you want to read it.

My Thoughts:

This book follows Vera Martinez whose trying to survive in a town where everyone treats her like a dead freak because of her parents work which is similar to the Warren's work in the Conjuring movies.  In this book though Maxwell Oliver needs Vera's help with her parents in Barcelona helping someone else the pressure is on Vera to help Max whose Mom has gone crazy.

Vera notices that the people in town are all crazy about a self help group.  But is the group helping or are they taking over?  Vera whose adamant she has no powers feels compelled to help her class mate.  With the help of Vera's aunt and a local priest the hunt is on to help one helpless woman so over taken by grief she can barely get through the day.

This book was incredible especially for anyone who loves The Nun and The Conjuring movies it pulls you in and you can't put it down til you know the kids will be alright!  I feel in love with Vera and felt for her when you read about her issues and Max's issues you want to take them somewhere safe!

Review: Chain of Gold by: Cassandra Clare

Title: Chain of Gold
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Series: The Last Hours #1
Format: Hardcover ( 592 p.)
Source: Personal Purchase

Description:

Chain of Gold, a Shadowhunters novel, is the first novel in a brand-new trilogy where evil hides in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any blade. .

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else.

But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

My Review:

Cordelia Carstairs as recently moved to London to try to build a life for herself and her mother and brother after her father is in jail in Idris.  She meets an old friend James Herondale and his sister Lucie.  They are soon drawn into fighting Demon's who roam during the day and are bent on killing Shadowhunters and it's up to Lucie Cordelia and The Merry Thieves to get to the bottom of what is going on and why?

We also see Will and Tessa Herondale along with Silent Brother Jem who became a silent brother during the Infernal Devices.  James is determined to discover who Tessa's father was and whether he's connected to the Demon attacks!

We also meet Grace Blackthorn who seems to have her own agenda and her mother is determined to not have anything to do with the Herondale's as she blames them for past events.  Grace seems to use and toss away people when it suits her game.  What is Grace up to and why?

This book is full of everything we expect with Shadowhunters.  They pull you in and won't let you go until you know the whole story.  It's such an addicting place you wish it was real to be a part of their world!  Definitely a great series to enjoy!

Review: Friday Nights Bites by: Chloe Neill

Title: Friday Nights Bite
Author: Chloe Neill
Publisher: Penquin
Format: Paperback ( 329 p.)

Description:

Vamps in Chicago!

You’d think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, ten months later, we’re enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite—fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross and stake-wielding slayers. Don’t get me wrong, Joe Public isn’t exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven’t stormed the castle yet.

But all that will change once they learn about the Raves—mass feeding parties where vampires round up humans like cattle and drink themselves silly. Most civilized vampires frown on this behavior, putting mere mortals at ease with their policy of asking a person’s consent before taking a big gulp of the red stuff. However, that doesn’t make good copy for a first time reporter looking to impress his high society family.

So now my “master,” the centuries old, yet gorgeously well-preserved Ethan Sullivan, wants me to reconnect with my own upper class family and act as liaison between humans and vampires—and keep the more unsavory aspects of our existence out of the media. But someone doesn’t want people and vamps to play nicey-nice—someone with an ancient grudge.

My Review:

Vamps in Chicago holy cow.  The vampires are coming out of the closet and people are unsure of what to think add that Merit needs to get in with her parents to see what high society is saying and doing about them.  Add the fact that someone is targeting shape shifters and Merit thinks there is more to it than anyone knows about.  On top of that Merit's change didn't go peacefully and she seems to be suppressing her vampire side which will make her more vulnerable than ever!  When they find out Celine is on the loose all hell breaks loose.

I love this series it's fresh and exciting change from other books I've read.  This one pulled you in finding quickly how much you love Merit and Mallory's relationship and watching the tension between Merit and her master Vampire Ethan! I was totally hooked and can't wait to see where this ride takes us on next!  Definitely great for those who miss Sookie Stackhouse.

Review: Some Girls Bite by: Chloe Neill

Title: Some Girls Bite
Author: Chloe Neill
Publisher:  Berkley Books
Series: Chicagoland Vampires #1
Pages: 341
Format: Paperback
Source: Library

Description:

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker–and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately, he expects her gratitude–and servitude.

But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.

My Thoughts:

This book follows Merit who finds herself waking up and not feeling like herself finding out she's been changed after someone tried to kill her.  Now she is a newborn vamp.  She has alot to learn in a short amount of time.  It takes a bumpy ride to find her way.  Meanwhile someone is killing women and trying to pin it on Merit's master Ethan Sullivan and his house Cadogan.  Who is committing these crimes and why?

I enjoyed this different take on vampires and the supernatural world.  Was definitely different then other books on vampires.  Merit is definitely a kick butt character who doesn't take crap from anyone and is very different from the other vamps.  Can't wait to see where her journey leads!
