I love to sneak a character from one of my other stories into new releases or works-in-progress, if possible. In 30 Seconds Before, I managed to slip in a character from my Disaster Crimes Series. It couldn’t be just any character, though, but someone that would make sense in a mainstream thriller about cops. I’m sure fans of my series have an inkling of who I’m talking about.
Below is an excerpt with my special 30 Seconds Before guest.
Blake took off the back of the pre-paid cell phone as the three vehicles raced out of the parking lot. He inspected the battery and casing for signs of tampering; he didn’t want a bug listening to him. Not finding anything, he removed his iPhone from the glove compartment and called someone he knew would still be at the police department working. Not his department, though, the Orlando Police Department.
“Thorn, it’s Herro.”
“Hey, man! It’s been a long time.”
Blake had crossed paths with Thorn many years ago when he was a rookie. They worked a thirteen-year-old girl’s murder case and caught the murderer together— the girl’s stepfather. Shortly after that, Thorn transferred to Florida.
“Thorn, I need a favor, and I need it to stay between us.”
A brief moment of silence stretched on the other end. “What do you need?”
Those four words were a declaration of trust.
1. I had to create a link between Blake and Thorn, so why not have them work together in Cleveland before Thorn moves to Florida? This gives me an opening to potentially create more backstory for Thorn. Perhaps even his own story.
2. Thorn uses his computer to find the addresses for Blake. In Seismic Crimes, he admits to hacking a laptop to find my MCs’ whereabouts. He obviously had good computer skills.
3.Even in this short piece, Thorn exhibits his loyalty. In the Disaster Crimes Series, he’s fiercely loyal to his friends, Beth and Donovan, and always had their backs. If he counts you as a friend, he’ll do anything for you.
